Storage & prep

When to sow: May – June

First hydrate your compost discs, pop each one in a tub of water and wait until it's expanded (20 mins or so). Tip the compost into a pot and push a bean seed in until it's covered. Repeat five times until you've used all your discs and pots. Give them a good water and place them on a tray on a sunny windowsill to watch them start to sprout. Keep them watered. Once your plants get to about 15cm tall and start to mature they will outgrow their pots and it will be time to get them planted outside, either in beds, borders or large containers. You'll need a structure for them to climb up, use bamboo canes or any strudy branches/sticks you can lay your hands on, prepare your soil and push them firmly into place (they'll need to be strong to support those giants!). The pots will break down into the soil so you can plant them pot and all at the base of each cane. Keep them watered and encourage them to cling onto the cane as they grow. Once the first flowers form you could give them a feed with Natural Grower's liquid fertiliser then watch as your first 'magic' beans appear. You should be picking lovely long bean pods all summer long.
