This vibrant yet smooth, organic Rioja was made by the first winery to become organic in the area; no mean feat in a region otherwise thoroughly dominated by chemical-based agriculture. Viña Ijalba’s dedication to the cause is noteworthy, and its wines are interesting yet comfortingly familiar for those that habitually turn to Rioja.
Aromas of dark blueberries meet a wonderfully silky mouthfeel and soft tannic lining. There is oak, but it doesn’t dominate the conversation being had in the glass which certainly reflects a more contemporary style emerging out of the region. It also makes Rioja more adaptable to a more diverse array of foods, rather than the classic grilled red meat options.
