All those lovely spicy, orangey flavours that make hot cross buns so yummy are also a perfect pair for chocolate, so we added them to this vegan-friendly hot chocolate to make a delicious Easter treat.

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 4 Medjool dates, pitted
  • Zest and juice of 1 orange
  • 1 tsp mixed spice
  • A drop of vanilla extract (optional)
  • 400ml almond drink

Method

1. Whizz the cocoa powder, pitted dates, orange zest and juice, mixed spice and vanilla extract (if using) in blender or food processor till smooth. Gradually trickle in the almond drink, till it is frothy, creamy and smooth. Pour into a pan and simmer on a medium heat till warmed through, whisking to make it extra light and frothy.
2. No blender? Just finely chop the dates then mush them with the flat side of the knife on a large cutting board to form a smooth paste. Scrape into a pan with the remaining ingredients. Gently warm through, whisking everything together as you go. Strain through a sieve. As you’ll be straining some of the dates you might need to add a little honey or sugar to sweeten it further.
