Hot Cross Hot Choc

All those lovely spicy, orangey flavours in our favourite hot cross buns are a perfect pair for chocolate. A healthy Easter treat.


  • 2 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 4 pitted dates
  • Zest and juice of 1 orange
  • 1 tsp mixed spice
  • A drop of vanilla extract (optional)
  • 400ml almond milk

1. Whizz the cocoa powder, pitted dates, orange zest and juice, mixed spice and vanilla (if using) in blender or food processor till smooth. Gradually trickle in the milk, till it is frothy, creamy and smooth. Gently simmer in a saucepan till warmed through. Whisk as you warm to give extra light-and frothiness.
2. No blender? Just mush and chop the dates on a large cutting board to form a smooth paste. Scrape into a saucepan with the remaining ingredients. Gently warm through, whisking everything together as you go. Strain through a sieve. As you’ll be straining some of the dates you might need to add a little honey or sugar to sweeten it further.
