Back in the 80s, when Jedward-style hairdos where the norm, a man called James White started making cider in Suffolk. He made some delicious apply tipples but the money wasn’t flowing. A man named Lawrence Mallinson came to the rescue and started it again from scratch as an apple juice producer. Having read history at Cambridge, he knew that James White’s name sounded “more yeoman English farmer than my own,” which he says, “is a bit too City Gent!” Lawrence treats his juices like wine, featuring individual varieties of Bramley, Cox and Russet. “You expect that with wine so why not apple juices,” he says. He’s also created some delicious blends under a new identity, Manic Organic, as well as and the ultra good-for-you beetroot juice – a splash of which, would do John and Edward a bit of good.
