Seasonal apples bring their crisp sweetness to this creamy green smoothie, made with soft kale leaves, mild celery and rich, velvety bananas whizzed with an earthy dash of maca root powder.

Ingredients you'll need
- 3 apples
- 2 bananas
- 50g kale
- 1 celery stick
- 1 tsp maca root powder

- 200-300ml cold water
- A few ice cubes

Step by step this way

Cut the apples into quarters and slice out the cores. Pop the apple pieces into your blender. Peel and break in the bananas. Trim the woody cores out of the kale, then roughly chop the leaves and add them to the blender. Trim and chop the celery and add it to the blender.

Tip 1 tsp maca root powder into the blender. Pour in 200ml cold water and add a handful of ice cubes. Blend till smooth, trickling in a little more water to get your preferred consistency. Pour the smoothie into 2 glasses and serve.

Maca root, sometimes called Peruvian ginseng, is native to the Andes Mountains and looks a bit like a long skinny turnip. In its dried, powdered form, it has an earthy nuttiness to it.
