- Deep red Detroit Beetroot, introduced all the way back in 1892 in Michigan, USA, which sports large round roots that store beautifully.

- Classic French Tender and True Parsnip, which tastes best when left in the ground until after the last frosts, so it becomes even sweeter.

- Crunchy and firm Purple Top Milan Turnip, which is easy to grow, quick to mature and simple to store. Perfect for pickling, with nutritious leaves.

- Peppery Cherry Belle Radish, winner of the RHS Award of Garden Merit in 2008.

Producer

Vital Seeds is a small independent seed company based in Devon producing and selling organic and open-pollinated seeds. Unlike hybrid varieties it is possible to save seed from these varieties year after and they can adapt to your local climate and soil conditions over time. Vital Seeds are committed to educating gardeners and growers about how to save their own seed in the hope of creating a more resilient food system.

Storage & prep

Beetroot:
When to sow: Feb – July
Spacing: 30 x 10cm
Tips: Early sowings can be made indoors in modules from February and transplanted 4-5 weeks later. From March seeds can be direct-sown with protection from frost. Maincrop beetroot is direct-sown outdoors from April. Seeds should be sown into soil with a reasonably fine tilth. Beetroot ‘seeds’ are clusters of seeds which means they will need thinning to achieve their final spacing (30cm between rows, 10cm in-row).

Parsnip:
When to sow: March – May
Spacing: 15 x 30cm
Tips: Unless you want a really early harvest, we recommend waiting until the soil has warmed up in late April or even early May to sow parsnips. They are very slow to germinate and the extra warmth can really help.
Sow three seeds every 15cm in rows 30cm apart, and thin to one plant per station. Pay particular attention to weeds during the early stages and you will get a fine crop.

Turnip:
When to sow: Feb – Aug
Spacing: 15 x 30cm
Tips: Turnips can be sown from February under protection, or in mid-March until May outdoors. Fleece or netting is recommended to protect from root fly.
Maincrop turnips can be sown from mid-July to late August. Turnips are fast growing with low nutrient requirements.

Radish:
When to sow: Feb – Aug
Spacing: 2 x 15cm
Tips: Sow seeds directly in the soil. Outdoors from March under fleece, or under cover from mid February in rows 10-15cm apart. Useful for inter-cropping and catch-cropping or marking rows of slower germinating seeds.
