Producer

Vital Seeds is a small independent seed company based in Devon producing and selling organic and open-pollinated seeds. Unlike hybrid varieties it is possible to save seed from these varieties year after and they can adapt to your local climate and soil conditions over time. Vital Seeds are committed to educating gardeners and growers about how to save their own seed in the hope of creating a more resilient food system.

Storage & prep

Runner Beans: When to sow: May – June
Spacing: 65 x 40cm
Tips: Direct sow from May until the beginning of June, when the soil has warmed up. If sown when the soil is too cold and/or wet the beans may rot. We recommend building the climbing structure first (poles distanced 65cm between rows and 40cm within the row) and then planting four beans at the base of each pole 4cm deep. This way you will know exactly where the beans have been planted and also you will not damage the roots when building the structure.

Broad Beans: When to sow: Feb – May
Spacing: 20 x 50cm
Tips: For spring-sown varieties, sow under cover from February and transplant to final spacing or direct sow in March until May. Sow seeds 6cm deep in rows 50cm apart.
For over-wintering varieties direct sow in November.

Climbing French Beans:
When to sow: May – June
Spacing: 65 x 40cm

We recommend building the climbing structure first (poles distanced 65cm between rows and 40cm within the row) and then planting four beans at the base of each pole 4cm deep. This way you will know exactly where the beans have been planted and also you will not damage the roots when building the structure.

Dwarf French Beans:

Tips: Direct sow in 4cm deep drills, spacing seeds 12cm apart, and thin to final spacing. Wait until the soil has warmed up, from May until the beginning of July. If sown when the soil is too cold and/or wet the beans may rot. The seeds can also be sown indoors in pots from April and planted out at their final spacing.
