Whether grown in containers, bags or in the ground, Ambo is a ‘Main Crop’ variety, so it’s best to plant your tubers by May. They’re high yielding and have good drought resistance, so in 20-25 weeks, you’ll have a bumper crop of delicious, floury potatoes that are perfect for boiling, mashing and roasting as jacket potatoes.

Storage & prep

Remove your seed potatoes from their net as soon as you receive them, pop them in a tray or egg box on a sunny windowsill to 'chit'. Wait for shoots to sprout out of the 'eyes' (this can take a few weeks). Once you have some shoots you can plant your potatoes, plant them any time before June for a crop this year. You can grow small crops in large containers like sacks or bins. Fill the bottom six inches of your container with potting compost and plant your potatoes just under the surface. As the new stems grow keep covering them with more compost under the container is full. Alternatively, if you have the space, you can grow them in the ground. They like a sunny spot with good drainage. Dig a narrow trench about five inches deep and space your seed potatoes about 12 inches apart. 'Earth them up' as new shoots emerge as this will encourage your spuds to grow downwards.
