Jo Wright and her team at Organic Blooms work hard to bring organic flowers to your door. Based in Gloucestershire, they run as a social enterprise, providing jobs for those who might struggle in a traditional workplace. Horticultural therapy is at the heart of what they do – gardening and plant-tending being excellent options for those with varying support needs. We work with them to plan upcoming crops, making sure each flower is reliable, interesting and satisfying for their staff to grow. We’re proud to say that, because of our support, they’ve been able to hire more people than ever before.
For best results grow in a sheltered, sunny spot and keep protected from pollution and animal contamination.
Plant out at least 3 inches apart and water in.
Peas are frost hardy and can be planted out straight away. Beans need frost protection: either plant them out and cover with horticultural fleece at night, or pot up and keep in a greenhouse or on a sunny windowsill until the risk has passed.
If you don’t have a garden or allotment, you can plant them in a large pot on a patio, balcony or doorstep.
Add supports for the plants to climb up, such as a wigwam of canes with twine wrapped around every few inches.
Once your peas and beans start producing pods, keep picking regularly to keep them productive. Best eaten raw, gently steamed or thrown into stir fries, risottos and soups during the last couple of minutes of cooking.
