- 750g carrots
- 1½kg potatoes

Chappit tatties - or mashed potatoes - make a great side to go with your poached chicken. Simply peel, chop and boil potatoes till they're soft. Then drain and mash with plenty of butter, chopped chives, salt and pepper.

Creamed cavolo nero is a hearty winter treat. Shred plenmty of cavolo nero, then simmer for 3 mins, drain and squeeze out as much water as possible. Sweat a finely chopped onion in butter till soft. Stir in crushed garlic and the cavolo nero. Add a spoonful of mustard and a pot of double cream. Gently heat till warmed through.
