Klaxon! Like we have long suspected, we should all be eating more fruit & veg, nuts, seeds, and whole grains. For those looking to get more into your diet, we’ve made a handy round-up of some of the things to pop in your basket for your next shop.
Whole foods and nothing but the whole foods
The grain, the whole grain and nothing but the grain
Who says carbs are bad? Working some of these grains into how you eat is a great start to packing in more of the good stuff. Even a simple switch from a white to whole grain loaf is a great start. We promise it’ll make your toast and sandwiches taste just as good.
Toast not your thing? Fancy a comforting bowl of porridge instead? Our Organic Jumbo Oats are just the ticket. They’re made by rolling whole oats for a rougher and more textured finish and will transform into a marvellously thick porridge. Psssst –perfect to load up with seeds and fruit too. Or you could transform them into these very virtuous Oatmeal Cookie Truffles.
Think of white rice as a de-powered Marvel superhero. Brown rice is a whole grain, higher in vitamins and minerals like vitamin B, magnesium and zinc to name a few. During the process of making white rice, the bran is removed too. So that means 100g of brown rice would give 1.8 grams of fibre, whereas the same weight of white rice provides 0.4g of fibre.
Bulgar wheat, buckwheat & quinoa
A trio of super grains.
Buckwheat’s a gluten free pseudo-grain, and interestingly, closer related to rhubarb than wheat, being a fruit seed, not a cereal grain as widely thought. Our Roasted Garlic, Spinach & Buckwheat Soup has a satisfying bite thanks to the buckwheat grains and is just generally delicious.
For newcomers to the wonder-grain that is organic quinoa, it’s pronounced keen-wah. High in fibre and protein, we suggest thinking of it a bit like couscous, since it goes so well with roast veg and in hearty salads. We’re not the only fans though – even NASA reckons it’s a great candidate for growing in space, as it’s easy to store and satisfyingly filling.
A case for nuts & seeds
Let’s start with a good all-rounder. Our mixed nuts are a handy thing to have around when that hankerin’ for a snack comes around. This fantastic selection includes brazils, cashews, walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts and peanuts.
These organic walnuts are a delicious snack. Walnuts are also an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, and are great raw or cooked, especially in banana bread or our Banana, Coffee & Walnut Muffins.
Put down the pumpkin carving knife. We've bagged the organic pumpkin seeds for you.A great healthy snack, pumpkin seeds can be sprinkled over everything from salads to soups, muffins to casseroles and quinoa to curries.
