Made with Garnacha Tintorera (also known as Alicante Bouschet), this hardy variety can withstand the sweltering and dry summers of South-East Spain and absolutely loves cosying up in a barrel for a few months. The grapes are hand harvested in early October and the focus here is on the smaller berries which carry a wonderfully rich concentration from vine to bottle. The grapes are fermented and then moved to American oak casks which bestow their famous toasty smoothness for 8 months before bottling. The result is a wine with both richness and focus, with punchy flavours of autumn bramble fruits and wild foraged herbs.

This wine comes by way of Piqueras Wines in Almansa, close to Alicante, who’ve been in the business for 100 years, ever since Jose Piqueras Lopez won the Christmas lottery and built a winery with the winnings. Like all of our favourite winemakers, the Piqueras family stand by their belief that the best wine is made in the vineyard with the happy, healthy grapes rather than technological advances in the cellar to mask over any imperfections. They also really care about the environment which means that, alongside working organically, they use special lightweight bottles to reduce their carbon emissions and also use solar power from panels on top of the winery to fuel their whole operation. Their sheep are encouraged to graze in the vineyard too to provide a much needed natural fertiliser to the nutrient-poor soil.
