Bananas are now the world's most popular fruit but this popularity has come at a price as many of the world's banana growers are cruelly exploited and live and work in shocking conditions. With our fairtrade bananas you can feel at ease that we are actually working with our growers to ensure a better future for our growers and their children.
Country of Origin - Dominican Republic
Class - Minimum Class 2
Our Fairtrade bananas are grown by BANELINO, a cooperative group of over 300 small producers in a small region of Dominican Republic. The impact of Fairtrade on developing countries is analyzed at different levels: family, organizational and territorial. BANELINO is a success story that excels in all these categories. Fairtrade has enabled them to set up education centres and medical clinics right on the farms. They’ve also established fumigation programs against malaria, and a sports curriculum to keep adolescents away from drugs and alcohol. The guarantee of a market for their produce at a fair price has significantly improved the quality of lives of not only families directly involved in the banana plantations. Other peripheral businesses in the region have prospered because there is disposable income available in the territory.
Bananas brown quickly once peeled unless tossed in citrus juices. In recipes without citrus juices you should prepare them last and add them just before cooking.
If your bananas are delivered to you and are still slightly green, don't worry, as they will continue to ripen. Storing them with other fruit will cause the other fruit to ripen more quickly, so they are best stored separately.
