A crafty collection with Binti

“Binti” means “young lady” in Swahili, “daughter of” in Arabic, and “request” in Punjabi. Working within the UK and abroad, Binti is a charity with the mission to provide menstrual dignity to all girls, all over the world. This means facilitating access to pads, educating girls about what menstruation is and what to expect, whilst dispelling stigma, taboos, myths and negative perceptions around menstruation. Headquartered in the UK, they currently run projects in India, Kenya, Swaziland and the U.S, as well as here within the UK.

How are Abel & Cole getting involved?

One of the amazing things Binti do is enable local women across India to run their own franchise by making and selling reusable fabric menstrual pads. With access to this cost-effective reusable option, women and girls are able to save money, prevent single-use waste entering the environment whilst investing in sustainable jobs that empower women in their own communities. Any offcuts of fabric that cannot be used in making these pads are also repurposed into tactile teaching aids.

Here at Abel & Cole, we believe sustainability is at the heart of what we do, and know our customers are a caring, crafty bunch. With this in mind, we asked you to have a declutter and donate your unwanted fabric scraps and offcuts to help these women make more of what so many need. With your help, we were able to collect four pallets of fabric for Binti to put to good use.
