More chocolate, less plastic

A new British survey has revealed that 9 out of 10 people like chocolate. The 10th person was telling fibs. If you didn’t have enough reasons to love organic chocolate (we’re still daydreaming about all the gorgeous chocolatey stuff from our Easter Book), get ready for an extra little sweetener. Organic chocolate makers, Cocoa Loco, are not only invested in ethical practices when it comes to the ingredients they source and how it’s made, but they’re making steps to see that it’s wrapped up sustainably too.

Finger on the buttons
One of Cocoa Loco’s founders, Rory, tells us: “Cocoa Loco have always considered the environment when designing our packaging. That is why you won’t find a plastic window glued into our Easter egg boxes, so the components of the packaging can be recycled separately. Following Sir David Attenborough’s programme about plastic in the environment last year, increased public awareness and pressure has meant that more compostable packaging materials have become available to small companies like ours. We have leapt at the opportunity to embrace them. Easter egg packaging on the High Street can be more plastic than chocolate and so we are delighted to be able to offer an alternative choice.”

A brand new innovation of Cocoa Loco’s this year is their compostable packaging (like their chocolate bunny lollies). And the chocolate itself is doing wonderful things for the local community where it’s grown.

“Our cocoa beans are from the Dominican Republic, where cocoa is grown by around 40,000 small-scale cocoa growers. Fairtrade support farmers in the Dominican Republic; schools have been built and repaired, with scholarships and equipment provided to students from poorer families. In the cooperative we source our beans from, a new IT centre has been built to help children with school work whilst bringing the internet to the community. A clinic, free medical checks, and clean water projects are improving health.” Choosing organic chocolate is a simple way to make a difference to the lives of the people who grow the things we love (and we really do love chocolate)!”
