Some chefs consider San Marzano tomatoes to be the best in the world for making tomato sauce. It’s the only tomato variety you can use to make an authentic Neapolitan Pizza. The story goes that the first seed of the San Marzano tomato came to Campania in 1770, as a gift from the Kingdom of Peru to the Kingdom of Naples. They come from a small town of the same name near Naples, Italy, and were first grown in volcanic soil in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius. The volcanic soil is believed to act as a filter for water impurities. Compared to the Roma Tomatoes with which most people are familiar, Marzano tomatoes are thinner and pointier in shape. The flesh is much thicker with fewer seeds, and the taste is much stronger, sweeter and less acidic. Many people describe the taste as bittersweet, like high-quality chocolate. Try them and see what you think!

Our tomatoes are grown in the nutrient rich soil of south east Sicily between Mount Etna and the Mediterranean. Our grower Vittorio based in Marina di Ragusa is a specialist grower and raises many of the more beautiful and unusual varieties. We work with this company throughout the season and also take melons and peppers for our boxes too. They recycle rainwater to use in their irrigation.

Storage & prep

There is no need to do more than a quick rinse before slicing, to add to a salad. Some people prefer to remove the skin; some recipes may also require this. These tomatoes make a very flavoursome pasta sauce.
