The full name for these little citrusy beauties is Mandarin Satsuma Okitsu. Sounds like a marshal art! But, how can a Mandarin be a Satsuma at the same time? Are Mandarins and Satsumas the same thing? What on earth is a Clementine then? And tangerines, how do they fit into the picture? Well, it's hard getting a straight answer on these circular subjects, but apparently all Satsumas, Tangerines, Clementine and Mandarins are all Mandarins. So there you go. These Satsumas (Mandarins) are early season fruits and have slightly green skin, even when ripe. Orange skin colour is to do with the temperature – the colder it is, the orange-r they get. So don't let them languish in the fruit bowl or fridge waiting for them to go orange all over. They're ready to eat. Because they are early season, they are quite tangy and citrusy, which apparently makes them very popular in Japan. But they're also very popular with us, we just love 'em.

Alberto farms in sunny Valencia (Spain) where he grows all sort of soft citrus. We've been working with him for over 10 years now as his organic citrus fruits are the best we've ever tried. As well as helping the environment with his organic farming, he's also known to travel from his house down by the sea to his farm on his bike and back again (around 100km a day).
