Davenport Pinot Noir, 2017, Organic (75cl)

Davenport Pinot Noir, 2017, Organic (75cl)

(£2.93 per 100ml)
Organic Vegan

This vibrant and soulful organic English Pinot by the Davenport Estate is somewhat emblematic of the vast strides that the UK winemaking industry has made over the last decade. Grown on a South-facing vineyard, which is optimum for the even ripening of grapes, the fruit is de-stemmed before being crushed, ensuring that any tannins are minimal and fine. The grapes are then left to ferment spontaneously, before being gently transferred to old oak barrels and left for 9 months to develop before bottling. A real miracle from the pinched vintage of 2017 in which a great deal of England’s Pinot was eradicated by frost at the beginning of the growing season. Here, freshness is inherent, leading to notes of summer pudding and a touch of liquorice.

Will Davenport started planting grape vines in 1991, carefully selecting two sites in south-east England's High Weald. In 2000 both vineyard sites were registered for organic management with the Soil Association, making Davenport Vineyards one of only three commercial UK vineyards to become exclusively organic. Will is constantly looking for ways to improve, mostly by doing less rather than more so his 2007 wines are unfiltered, something of a first amongst English growers.
