our campaigns
when is british not british?
Food labelling rules seem to allow our supermarket chums to plaster some of their meat offerings with Union Jacks - when some of the meat comes from places as far flung as Thailand and Brazil. At Abel & Cole, we think British should mean British: born, bred, prepared and packed...
Join our campaign to get the rules changed!
EU legislation allows products, particularly pies and ready meals, to be labelled as British, even if it was made here with key ingredients from far flung places. We just think that clarity is required - animal welfare standards in some countries can often fall short of UK standards – and we think customers should be able to make informed choices.
At Abel & Cole, all of our fresh meat is British. Even if supermarkets want to import meat from far afield, they should be able to tell you where it's from. "Produced using chicken from the UK or Brazil" isn’t really good enough.
Keep it simple!
We've written to DEFRA to show our support. They have been putting pressure on supermarkets to improve their labelling – and early signs are encouraging. You can see the letter here.
We need you to join the campaign.
- Print off this template letter or copy and paste it and edit it as you wish - and send it to your local MP to share your views. If you don't know who your local MP is, you can use this handy website, www.writetothem.com.
- If they haven't already, ask them to sign the Early Day Motion 581 (find out more about EDM 581 here - regarding chicken welfare and labelling)
- When eating in restaurants ask where their meat is from – and if their eggs and chicken are free range.
- Spread the word!
