how to shop at Abel&Cole?

What are these boxes you talk about?
We put together these boxes each week with our farmers and growers. Every week you will receive different things, so our farmers can work with the changing seasons, and you get a variety of fun, new things that change throughout the year. We offer a range of boxes to suit all needs.
Do I have to order a box?
No! If you prefer, you can pick your own fruit and veg from our extras range. Or you can skip fruit and veg altogether, and try our meat, fish, dairy or other goodies. Your order just has to be a minimum value of £10.
How can I find out what's in the boxes this week?
Check the box contents in This Week's Boxes. If there are any items that you do not want then you can add them to your permanent or temporary dislikes. Occasionally we do have to change some items at the last minute as nature can be unpredictable!
Why are some fruits and vegetables only available in your boxes, but not as an 'Extra'?
Some fruits and vegetables, such as asparagus or strawberries, only have very short seasons and there might be limited numbers of organic farmers growing the crop. As a result, we can only get a certain amount to put in our boxes, but sadly not enough to offer them as 'Extras'.
What are likes and dislikes?
What is a 'dislike'? - If there's something that you dislike or that you're allergic to, we can exclude it from your box in the future. We call something a 'dislike' when you've asked us to remove it - even if you do actually like the item. If you love something, but ask us to remove it for one week, we'll still refer to it as a 'dislike'.

How does it work? - Once something is on your dislikes list, if we have planned it for your box, we'll replace it with something else instead. We offer this service on all our boxes, for no extra charge. We do limit your dislikes to 20 as we do need some options with which to replace your dislikes! If you are really struggling with 20 dislikes then perhaps a set box is not the best option for you. Why not just order those items that you like from our extras range instead of ordering a set box?

If we remove a dislike from your box we'll replace it with another seasonally available item. A fruit will be replaced with a fruit and a vegetable replaced with a vegetable. We can't guarantee to replace excluded items with things you've selected as 'my favourite', but it is very helpful for us to know what you like best when it comes to planning future crops with the growers.

What do I need to do? - We have automatically set all fruit and veg to be 'Fine to Include'. If you never want to receive a particular fruit and vegetable then you should change this to 'Always Remove'. If you would like us to remove the item for your next delivery only then change it to 'Remove this week'.

Our fruits and vegetables are listed individually and also in groups i.e. CABBAGES (all). Listed below the main group name are all the items included in that category - so CABBAGES (all) include red cabbage, white cabbage and green cabbage. If you tick the 'Always Remove' box next to CABBAGES (all) then we'll replace all cabbages in your box. However, if you like all cabbages except red cabbage then you should tick just tick the box next to red cabbage to exclude it.
How do I change my order?
You have full access to your online order details at all times. You can change or delete what you've ordered, the quantity, when items should arrive, and how often you would like them.

When you log in you'll automatically see your current order summary, which is divided into two sections showing your next delivery and any future items you've ordered. For each item, we show the next delivery date, price, quantity and how often it will be delivered.

To change the quantity, frequency or delivery date of anything on your order please click the amend order icon next to it. To remove an item, click the remove order icon next to it.

You are under no obligation to keep on ordering - you can stop at any time. You can either cancel online or contact us and we will do it for you. Customer feedback is really important to us and if you do decide to cancel we would really like to know why as any feedback - good or bad - does help us to improve our service.
What are my order deadlines?
You can make any changes you want to your order up until your order deadlines.

Everything is ordered and made specially for you. This means it's fantastically fresh, but it also means we need time to get it ready for you.

What happens if I need to cancel my order after the deadlines?
Please contact us as soon as possible if you would like to cancel your order after your deadline has passed.

As we order everything in specifically for you, and everyone has the same deadlines, we have nowhere for your order to go should you wish to cancel past your deadline. We therefore do have a cancellation charge of 100% for chilled items and 50% for everything else if you cancel after your deadline.

If you wish to cancel on the day of delivery then there is a 100% charge.

Remember - all of our meat and fish freezes really well and we could leave your delivery with a neighbour if you have gone away.
What is your delivery charge?
We add a small delivery charge of 99p to all orders.
Do I have to have a delivery every week?
It's incredibly helpful if you place a regular order - it lets us plan ahead with our growers to make sure they plant the right amounts.

We do, of course, accept that you may need to skip or cancel your order. You are free to do this at any time within our order deadlines.
Why don't you tell me what quantities are in the box?
We pack our boxes by hand and if we are packing five large oranges and our grower sends us smaller oranges than we expect, we'll pack six instead. Or if we're aiming to put 1Kg of cabbage into the boxes, but one week our heads of cabbage are 1.5kg each we'll still pack a whole one! Weights and numbers aren't always predictable so it's difficult to advertise exactly what you'll get. We try to make sure there's a reasonable portion of everything in the box, but if you feel you've been given a portion of something that's too small please let us know.
Why don't you tell me where my vegetables are from each week?
We often purchase the same item from several growers in a particular week as we try to support smaller farmers. It enables us to take smaller harvests and to give you a more reliable supply. We may also bring in supplies from different growers at the last minute, dependant on the weather, crop problems or increased demand from customers. For this reason, it's difficult for us to give full details of where each item in your box comes from.
I am a vegetarian, vegan, coeliac...?
We always try to include as much information as possible in the information section which you can access by clicking on the (i) button next to the product name.

If the information you require is not available then please contact us and we will be able to help.

Nut allergies: Our fish cakes may contain traces of nuts. Our Christmas cakes and puddings all contain nuts. At certain times of the year, our boxes may contain coconuts, chestnuts and other nuts. Nuts (especially peanuts) are used in a large number of products, including bread, chocolate and other processed foods. If a production line is used for a food that contains nuts, it is possible that non-nut foods will be contaminated. Therefore we cannot guarantee that all of our products are 100% nut free.
