Keeping you posted
At the time of writing…we’ve had 261 bike pledged!! It’s going up steadily every day, and the bike is moving along on the pledge page nicely. We want to collect another 390 by October 2nd.
All falling into place
Pedal-powered party is it? Oh yes. With the fantastic help of Magnificent Revolution we’re powering the amps for our 2 bands and the movie from Re~Cycle with 8 bikes…for all ages, and another bike to power a blender to make fresh smoothies. The way our chef Paul does to use up our ‘past its peak’ fruit and veg.
Chat to some bike experts, bring your bike to join in some cycling games with Biker’s Delight, and join the potato printing and apple bobbing. Chef is also making plenty of his top organic burgers, chickpea burgers and salads, and we’ll have plenty of our organic beers…all being sold to raise money to get the bike container to Ghana.
Join us 11am-3pm at A&C HQ, Waterside Way, London, SW17
Have you got a bike you wouldn’t miss?
Fill in the form here if you do. It’s pretty important, as we need to plan when we can fill a container. If it looks like we’re getting more or less, we’ll revert to plan B, C… you know.
Rally the troops
If you know others who might like to join the party, we can send you some posters to help spread the word. The more the merrier.
How to find us on Saturday 25th September
It’s very easy to find us, whether by bike, foot, bus or car…and we’ll signpost the way from our nearest train station Haydons Road and the underground Colliers Wood. There’s also regular buses from Wimbledon train station.
Know any facts about bikes or cycling?
We’ve been chatting about bike-related facts and figures, like…
- 20 bicycles can be parked in the same space as one car!
- the longest tandem was almost 67 feet long and seated 35 riders!
- approximately 105 million bicycles are made every year
Do you know any others?

Have you ever thought of using your vans to collect bikes outside of London? We have some old ones we could donate – maybe by prebooking a space, so your vans can pick up one at a time, or could they make a detour after dropping off all the boxes on that day’s schedule?

Me and my friends are collecting bikes in central London and riding them to Wimbledon on the 25th. So if you have a old bike you would like to give but can get there on the 25th. You can drop it, monday to friday 10am to 5pm at Squeaky Chains, 33 rushworth st. SE1 0RB. Or evenings and weekends at my place, 17 greenhills terrace, N1 3QD. If the bikes are not ridable, we’ll fixe it before to go so don’t disregard any bikes. Hope that’s can help. Any question 07944398204 or BikesToAfrica@gmail.com

I agree with villanova. Is there any way of picking up bikes from a collection point for people outside London? Lots of schools are trying to get Eco status and may be prepared to collect old bikes and store them for a day or so if your vans could then collect them. I could help you to arrange a couple of collection points in Crawley if that helps. This would also help schools with Community Cohesion – another government buzz word at the moment.

Hello Villanova and Katherine,
We are able to arrange some collections, though only when our vans are empty as they’re usually full even once made some drops because of the empty boxes. It’s really tricky, and a shame we can’t fit them in as you say, but we’ll do as much as possible to get hold of them. So if you aren’t able to get to one of our drop off days then it would be great if you can email us on bigbikedrop@abelandcole.co.uk and let us know…then we’ll try to find a way we can collect your bike.
Thank you for the great tip Katherine, we’re telling the schools we help fundraising with our Farmer’s Choice scheme about it, but if you can help in Crawley that would be great. Can you email us as well so we can talk more about it?
And thank you very much to Nina! This is fantastic, and we look forward to seeing you on the 25th!
I really appreciate everyone’s help with this, and enthusiasm! We’re getting there…about 330 already pledged!
Thanks,
Emma
